How Vegan Friendly is Milano?

Ciao!

I’ve been living in Milan for almost 3 years, so I’ve had lots of time to try all the vegan food the city has to offer.

New spots are popping up all the time and I’m so grateful that there are always more and more options!

Italy might not be thought as super vegan friendly, but some cities are the exception and Milan is one of these!

Of course, it doesn’t compare to some other big European cities, but there is a bit of everything, from breakfast and brunch spots to dinner and street food!

Whether you're planning a trip or you're a local looking for your next go-to spot, I’ve got you covered.

Today, I’m sharing:

✅ My most recent vegan discoveries in Milan
✅ A few practical tips for eating plant-based in the city
👀 My full Milan Vegan Food Guide with 30+ spots

My Top 3 Recent Discoveries in Milan

Altatto Bistrot – A fine-dining vegan experience in a cozy setting. Seasonal ingredients (the menu changes very often based on seasonality) and creative dishes.

The restaurant is vegetarian and vegan but the menu it’s mostly vegan already. I had the tasting menu which was delicious and reasonably priced!

The Meet – A small and cute cafe near Parco Sempione. They serve brunch, lunch, aperitivo and dinner. It’s casual and cozy but make sure to check their opening hours because they’re not always open. The burrito was seriously delicious!

Giardì- A cute cafe near Centrale station area serving breakfast and lunch during the week and also open for dinner on the weekends. Very nice sandwiches and bowls. I loved the meatballs and mushroom sandwich!

I’ve also been exploring Chinatown a lot, I don’t go anywhere in particular, just walk around it and see what vegan options they have and there’s always something! Like these cold noodles (Liang Pi) with seitan from MO or the tofu skin bao from Baozi.

Some Tips for Plant-Based Eating in Milan

✔️ Always ask for "senza formaggio" – A lot of veggie dishes come with cheese. Be clear upfront!
✔️ Lunchtime rules – Many restaurants close mid-afternoon. So it’s best to plan to eat between 12:30 and 14:30/15.
✔️ Supermarket gems – Look out for To.market, Dm and Naturasi for the best vegan friendly snacks, vegan cheeses, and ready meals.

✔️ Aperitivo = your best friend – In Italy when you have drinks in a bar or cafe they almost always bring you complimentary snacks, most of the time there’s something vegan - like taralli, olives, chips, focaccia, hard pretzels and things like that.
